And if we progress in the FA CUP then we will play either

READING or WEST BROMWICH ALBION

on Sunday 7 March 2010 Kick Off 1345 at either the Majeski Stadium or The Hawthorns.

Being as though we already have the 17 seater pre booked for the Sunderland fixture Glyn and myself have decided to keep this for the Sunday fixture should it occur. This means there is greater seat availability on the bus for this fixture and because of our splendid booking history with AVFC it also means that Glyn can obtain the tickets easier than before. As always a booking for the bus means that a Match Ticket will be obtained on your behalf so we can all sit together. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603

It is therfore very unlikely that we will be running any transport to this game but like everything we are flexible.A bus has been prebooked anyway and Glyn and myself have said we will only cancel it if demand is not forthcoming by March 2.As always a booking for the bus means that a Match Ticket will be obtained on your behalf so we can all sit together. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603

A 9 seater has been pencilled in with the Hire Co and it has also been suggested that a car could be used should only a few want to travel As always we are very flexible but we do need to know ASAP of your plans if you haven't already made us aware. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603

Aston Villa v Manchester United @ Wembley Stadium

Pete Baker, who does not have season ticket but does have a booking history, is intending to travel up to Villa Park on February 14 to "queue" for any tickets that might go on General Sale at 0900 on Monday the 15th. He is looking for anyone in the same boat to join him and share the costs of travel etc and also to have some company. Peter's telephone number is 07737 457009 if you would like to join him on his travels

On that note could you all look out for any used ticket stubs you have for away games as we are under the impression these will be taken into consideration. Chris Hurst is trying to build up these in his quest for a ticket and any duplicates could help Pete and others to get a ticket.

I'm sure you will all join me in wishing them good luck in their quest it will great to see as many Somerset Lions as we can there on the big day

THE FINAL

Well we did it and now we are on the way to Wembley. We shall of course be running transport to this one and here a few things that we feel should be brought to your attention

1. Will all members who are season tickets "get" their own tickets on the various days that they are released by AVFC depending on where you sit at Villa Park. This will obviously mean we cannot sit together at Wembley but it will eliminate the possibility of any possible misunderstanding regarding ticket aquiring.

2. On that note could we ask any member who is a season ticket holder and does NOT intend to attend the final to contact Glyn IMMEDIATELY on 07796956039 so he can use your final ticket entitlement for the benefit of members of the club who don't have a season ticket/booking history etc.

3. A 17 seater has been booked and will run up early on Final day itself. The timetable of pick ups will be published on the transport page nearer the day but it is our aim to eventually leave Weston Super Mare at 0700 arriving at Wembley around 1030-1100.You can work out your pick up time by subtracting 3 hours from your normal pick up time for a 1500 kick off at Villa Park. This will enable people to be able to do their own thing on the day and allows plenty of time to soak up the occasion and atmosphere.

4. A Mini Bus parking space has been reserved and paid for on the Official Coach Park at Wembley Stadium.

5. The cost of travel will be the normal away game rate of £20pp.

6. If you intend to travel on the Club Transport can you contact me ASAP by E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603 to book your seat on the Mini Bus.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION REF: MATCH TICKETS

Glyn has been very busy in the last few days getting tckets for the upcoming Away fixtures against Burnley (£32),Portsmouth (£20 and £5 Youths) and Manchester United (£42). This has meant an outlay of £955. I know that we have set payment due dates for the Manchester United and Burnley games but could those of you who have booked, get your monies to Glyn as soon as possible and especially those of you booked up for Portsmouth which was always going to be immediate payment .Posting cheques (made out to Somerset Lions) to

Somerset Lions
54a Lower Kewstoke Road
Worle
Weston Super Mare
BS22 4JU

(Please put the Match Fixture the cheque refers to on the back of it)

would be a great help as that would mean we can bank the money quicker and also from a safety view means Glyn does not have to carry so much cash around if people pay him at various matches.

FREE ADMISSION TO PRE MATCH SUITE

We have received an E Mail from Alan Perrins, AVFC Lions Clubs Co-Oridinator detailing plans for the David Targett Suite in regards to Lions Club Members. Here it is in full:

Dear Chairman,
We have been looking into the possibility of having our very own Lions Club lounge situated within the stadium for pre and post matchdays, in response to several requests from Branch Chairman.
As a trial until the end of this 2009/10 season The David Targett suite situated in Witton Lane will be used for Lions Club members with a current membership card.
The venue should be ideal for travelling Supporters clubs as its very close to the coach park -just 2 minutes walk.
The Bar prices for beers and soft drinks have been reverted back to normal Supporters Bar prices rather than the corporate pricing structure previously in place. The food available on a match day will also now include 2 different Curry’s with Rice and naan for £5.95 per head, Luxurious Pies £3.00 or with Chips £5.50 per head, and a variety of baguettes from £2.95.
For the forthcoming games v Stoke City on December 19th and West Ham United on January 16th entry in to the David Targett suite will be Free to Lions Club members in possession of a current membership card.
On entry you will also receive a Free raffle ticket, and a former Villa legend or two will be in attendance to speak to fans and make the draw for a bottle of special Aston Villa Champagne!
There will be an ACORNS bucket on reception for anyone who feels they would like to make a donation to the charity, no matter how small from 1p to £1 it all adds up! There is no obligation, only put in if you want to.
Match Programmes will still be available to those that require one on the door at cost, £3 each.
We would like you and your members to take the opportunity to make use of the facilities, and let us know if you would like the venue to become a permanent Lions Club venue, and what improvements you feel we should make to the facilities for 2010/11 season. If we make a success of this suite then we see no reason why this can’t be renamed The Lions Club Lounge and fill it every match with Lions Club members from near and far.
Normal entry fee to any of the suites around Villa Park for Lions Club members and Season Ticket holders is £4 with a programme, and £3 without.
We hope you take this as another positive step by the Club towards the Lions Clubs and the network as we have now grown to nearly 100 " live" Branches worldwide.
“ Up The Villa! ”
Best Regards Alan

CHELSEA PRE MATCH UPDATE

Despite the unfortunate news that came from Villa Park yeserday afternoon that the Acorns Hospice/Lions Club Question and Answer Session has been cancelled due to lack of support from other Lions Clubs it is still full steam ahead for this fixture. We are in the unusual position of still having 6 seats available on the mini bus and the Aston Villa club website www.avfc.co.uk is saying this morning @ 0700 that there are still match tickets available.

Can I also remind you all that ALL Travel bookings must be made by using the means detailed below so as there is no confusion as regards availability, pick up times etc.

E mail direct transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603 to make your booking

SOME GREAT NEWS FOR THE CHELSEA GAME

Those of you travelling on the mini bus will qualify for a FREE Ticket to the ACORNS CHILDREN HOSPICE/LIONS CLUB Question and Answer session with Gordan Cowans and Colin Gibson from the 1982 European Cup winning squad which is taking place in the Holte Suite immediately after the game.Tickets normally cost £5 but the Club has brought these as all the monies raised for this will go directly to Acorns. It is expected that it will last for about a hour so we shall be getting home at the time we usually do for a 3 o clock kick off.We at the Club hope you enjoy this and hope this is the first of many things we can bring you to add to your membership experience.

DECEMBER'S AWAY GAME

As you all are aware it is our intention this year to run transport to 1 Away game per month during the season.December however puts us in a tricky situation. Our initial intention was to run to the midweek fixture against Sunderland on the 15th whose supporters promised us a hearty welcome following our showing against their neighbours and relegating Newcastle United on the last day of last season.Due to fact that only 4 people have shown any interest it makes running a bus up to the North East not very feasible economically. The weekend before (12th) Villa go to Old Trafford to play Manchester United and it has been suggested by some that this would be the better option for the club.Therfore it is proposed that this will be put out to you all to "vote" for your choice. A 17 seater had been pencilled in for the Manchester United game and a 9 seater has been pencilled in for the Sunderland game. This will require confirmation by October 28th at the latest so we can go ahead with ticketing arrangements etc for the game chosen. So can you send your "vote" to me if you wish to travel to the game of your choice the majority decision will be the winner as it were and it will be full steam ahead after that.
by midnight on the 27th October at the latest. Regular updates on how the voting is going will be posted every Sunday night.

Footnote

The Club will not be running any transport to the Arsenal game at the Emirates Stadium on Xmas Sunday due to the fact the Hire Companies we have been in touch with want us to hire from Xmas Eve to the 28th December due to them closing over the Holiday Period.A four day hire makes any journey economically disastrous. If you wish to travel to this fixture independently then Glyn will happily get you tickets through the Clubs Away Ticket allocation.

BOOKINGS ANNOUNCEMENT

Ref: Occasional Travellers and Other Lions Clubs Branches Members

In view of recent events where bookings have been made and then subsequently not honoured we will now be introducing a new procedure as regards bookings from "One Match Members" and other Lions Clubs Branches members. These bookings in future will be required to provide a £5 deposit before a booking is entered on the mini bus list. This will obviously NOT affect Full Somerset Members but they should bear in mind should they say "put so and so down for a certain match" they will be required to pay the deposit. It's a shame that we have had to do this but we are not prepared to lose potential bookings because it appears that the bus does not have adequate space, when in fact, we do eventually.

SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT AND SOME KIND MESSAGES

This Horse Trailer belongs to Nigel Shaw one of the new members who joined us this past summer. As you can see it is the famous colours of our beloved team and so are his racing colours too. Nigel has also appeared in "Claret and Blue" magazine and I have attached the article so you can read more. He certainly has a a very fine Aston Villa heritage in his family. His recent quote on the forum shows he his certainly enjoying himself on our travels.

"Thanks for a great day out on Saturday v. Pompey. Thoroughly enjoying my membership with the Club. Great bunch of people. Unfortunately I will not be able to make all games because of 'horsey' commitments, but will attend as many as I can. Talking of horses. I competed in a cross-country competition today (Sunday) and can advise that the famous colours came home in FIRST PLACE! This was the first time that we have won.Must have been the influence from Saturday's game."

Click Here to read the Claret and Blue article

****

And talking of kind words......... Jay and Jess, also new members this summer, posted these kind words on the forum as well:

"We would like to thank the Somerset Lions
Was our third trip yesterday to the home of football... Once again myself and Jessie thoroughly enjoyed the match day experience.
We have been made to feel very welcome and look forward to many more trips.
So thanks....
next stop.. Ewood Park"

Well here we are,the final diary entry before the start of the season.Lets hope we "have a good 'un". A warm welcome is extended to all the New Members who have signed up and a "great to see you again" to all of you who have renewed. We had some great times on our travels last season, and this year now we all know each other a lot better we should continue this trend. Anyway here is a little checklist of some reminders for you for tomorrow:

On the money side don't forget to bring your Membership or Renewal Fees with you if you haven't already paid. Also with that don't forget your Membership Forms so that your contact details are kept up to date.(Click for a Printable Membership Form )

As announced previously the fare for this game will be £15pp and continues our aim and desire to bring cheap and affordable transport to all matches.

Yesterdays news that due to circumstances beyond our control means we will not receive the New Season's Membership Cards in time for this match. We have put temporary measures in place in order to fulfil our obligations to you of membership of our club.Thanking you in anticipation of your understanding.

The ever popular Somerset Lions Acorns First Goalscorer and Correct Score draws will take place on all buses this year.So don't forgot those pound coins and remember even if you don't win the Acorns Organisation will.

Those of you who visit the forum know that any topic of conversation seems to get doughnuts mentioned at some time. I am bringing some Jam ones for us to have at our Michaelwood Coffee Stop this week. But feel free to bring some more or even different types to pass around.

Hope you all enjoy this upcoming season and let's all hope it's a momentous one.

UP THE VILLA !!!!!!!!!!!

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT MEMBERSHIP CARDS

We have been informed by Alan Perrins, the Lions Club Co-Ordinator at AVFC that the Membership Cards wiil NOT be available for the start of the season. Can we ask you all to bring your Membership cards with you on Saturday from last year so you will be able to get into the Holte Suite if you are not a season ticket holder. Glyn will be bringing some of last years cards with him so those of you who may have thrown the old ones away are not affected.Your membership with us will of course be valid and we hope this situation is rectified by AVFC as soon as possible so we have no further inconvenience.New members this year will of course be given these cards, as well, until the new ones arrive.Hope this explains OK. Do not hesitate to contact Glyn ,Chris or myself if you have any queries. Our numbers are on the contact page. Click Here

SOMERSET LIONS ON

Since Chris Hurst started the group on Facebook we have had the opportunity to spread the word about our happy little band. The first post on there was from someone asking for some photos to be posted. As we do not have a dedicated album page on the website, and after discussions with Glyn and Chris, it was felt that we should utilise this to our advantage. So.all your dedicated photographers out there, post your pics of our travels and anything of interest regarding the Club etc. on Facebook and we can then pick a couple out to go on the main site as and when.

Links to the Facebook page can be found on all pages of the site and here is another one Click Here

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS AND NEW MEMBERSHIPS

Just a reminder to you all that have NOT renewed yet that Chris and Glyn will be collecting the years dues on Saturday.New Members can also join up as well. They have also asked that you bring your completed Membership Forms with you so the Clubs records can be kept up to date.

Click for a Printable Membership Form

We cannot emphasise enough the importance that you do this as the requirements of our VOSA permit mean everyone who travels with us MUST be a Member. AVFC also require us to have up to date records so our "Official Supporters Club" status is not affected. On that note we are assured by AVFC that the new seasons Membership Cards "are on the way" so we should hopefully have them for the start of the Season.

10 August 2009

CHANGES TO THE FIRST GOALSCORER COMPETITION

Due to the fact we do not know the Starting X1 when we make the draw at Michaelwood I felt some changes should be made to make this a lot more fairer and avoids any disappointment if your "pick" is either injured or not chosen to start. So when the Stadium announcer announces the team before the game the squad numbers in ascending order will correspond with your pick.

For Example:

Number Drawn Drew By Squad Number Player Paid
1 Glyn Hurst 2 Luke Young £1
2 Bob Moore 7 Ashley Young £1
3 Chris Hurst 10 John Carew £1
4 Pete Faulkner 17 Stiliyan Petrov £1
5 Craig Dunham 26 Craig Gardner £1
11 Dan Sketchley N/A Sub £1

The winner will then be announced when we get back on the mini bus to come home.Hope this works but least we can give it a try.

PS: Don't forget your £1 coins, you know we guarantee to have no change !!!!!

8 August 2009

Thank you for all your Travel Bookings today. The best single day since I have been doing this for them .I have updated the Transport Page (Portsmouth and Manchester City now added) (Click Here) but can you all please check that I have put you down for your bookings or even worse not included you.

2009-2010 Play Off Round 2nd Leg

Aston Villa v Rapid Wien 27 August 2009 KO TBA

As stated elsewhere midweek Home games will only be run if demand makes this a viable decision. It was proposed that an "Intent to Travel" booking would be taken up to 2100 on the Sunday preceding the game. There will be exceptions but these will be posted as usual on this site. So here it is our first European Home Tie of the season. I will take intent bookings and confirm the running of Transport as soon as a sufficent number of these is reached.

Aston Villa v Manchester City October 5th KO 2000

After a few enquiries from some members I can confirm that Transport will defintely be run for the Monday Night Match against Manchester City on October 5th. We are expecting a good take up on seats for this despite the abnormal day and kick off time.I will now take bookings for this game and post them on the Transport page.

Aston Villa v Portsmouth Scheduled for the 19th September 2009

Should we progress in the Europa League to the Group Stage then this game will probably be moved to Sunday 20th as it follows a Thursday Match Night.Transport will obviously be run as usual. Bookings are being taken now but can you bear this in mind when you commit yourselves.

1 August 2009

Look what Chris Hurst found in August's Magazine

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: REF: AWAY GAMES

Somerset Lions Away Match Tickets and Travel Season 2009-2010

Well it's August and it's full steam ahead for the new season. We have had a couple of enquiries from new and old members alike on the arrangements for travel and tickets for away games for the upcoming season. Here are a few guidelines:

Where there is demand and availability transport however possible will be run. Bear in mind that Monday Night and other midweek games will rarely be run due to people having to have time off work etc. Notification will be given well in advance when there is an exception to this policy.(Transport to Home games that fall into this criteria however will be run)

Match Tickets for these games will be purchased by the Club under our Official Supporters Club banner and all your personal reference numbers will be logged by us and AVFC so your own booking history is maintained and enhanced as the season progresses.

Definite and Intend to Travel bookings will be taken as and when they appear on the website.

Payment for match tickets must be made by yourselves no later than 14 days before the fixture.

This will enable us to return any unsold tickets due to drop outs etc. After this deadline you will liable for payment whether you use the ticket or not.Should you decide to travel with us after this cut off time then you will responsible for getting your own Match Ticket if the Clubs unsold ones have been returned. Travel payments will be taken as usual on the day of match itself.

Glyn

and on that note..........Click Here for something that just might interest you !!!

NEWS

VERY IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MEMBERSHIPS AND RENEWALS

We have now reconsidered our decision to have a Pay Pal Account.
This will NOT now be happening, however we have opened a new Bank Account for the sole purpose of handling the Club's finances.
We have also opened a Savings Account which will be for the money we raise for from the competitions we run on our travels. (Currently standing at £157) Details of the handover to them of the money raised in the last season will be posted here as soon as Glyn and Chris have arranged it

I know that some of you have been waiting for the Pay Pal to be set up so you could join/renew online, so can I ask all of you who wanted to do this to do it the "Old Fashioned" way by sending a cheque made out to "Somerset Lions" to Chris with your Application/Renewal. His address is on the Printable Membership Form and also on the Join Us page.

As a back up to this we will also collect Membership Fees on the Bus when you travel with us for the first time this new season so you can do it with that thing called cash !!!!!!
On a more serious note can you all bear in mind that to keep within the terms of our VOSA Permit we are not allowed to carry Non Members due to the Hire and Reward implications of the regulations.
Also we will be again operating a Temporary Membership Scheme where Members can book a seat on the bus for one off Guests who will be required to join the Somerset Lions for the day and also provide full details of address and contact telphone number.
The cost of this will be £5 for Adults and £2 for Youths under 16 per trip

Remember: No Membership = No Travel.

On the subject of Membership Cards these have not yet arrived from AVFC but they will be sent out as soon as they arrive. (Postman Pats Van is stationed on the starting grid outside Chris's house ready to go !!! ) If they do not arrive in time to send them out to you for the Wigan game we will hand them out on the bus

2009-10

Aston Villa v ???????????

The Draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round takes place on August 7. We will then know who our opponents are and whether we will be playing on Thursday 20 August or Thursday 27 August in the Home Leg. I realise that it is difficult in the area we live to get to these midweek games with the inconvenience of getting time off work etc. Due to the easier availability of mini buses and people carriers in midweek the plan this year will be to take bookings up to the Monday prior to the game.A decision will then be made on whether it is viable to run transport and also what size of transport to book if numbers are sufficent. I will keep you posted on developments etc. but I will take "pencilled in" intent to travel bookings. Bob.
