CHEQUE PRESENTATION 2011
As the club goes into it's fourth year of existence we have just sent a cheque for the sum of £300 to our beneficiary the Childrens Hospice SW based here in the South West. Louise Turner, our contact at CHSW,will be meeting us at Gordano Services at one of our trips in the New Year so we can "present" the cheque formally and get some photographs taken for the local press, here in Somerset. We will also be forwarding them on to AVFC ,where hopefully, like last year, it will published in a future matchday programme.
Overall in our existence we have now presented a Grand Total of £858 to various charities.
WELL DONE EVERYONE

*********** MEMBERSHIP UPDATE ***********
I have received an e mail from AVFC asking me to pass on to Branch members some changes to the Lions Club Membership.
From the Norwich City
the Lions Club membership card WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE "RIGHT OF ADMISSION" to the Holte Suite and the Holte Pub.In future
it will only give you the right to be admitted to the
The Lions Club Lounge (was the David Targett Suite) and the Gordon Cowans Suite in the Academy.
As a Chairman I am upset that this change has come
mid season as the Branch has sold memberships on the strength of this and other benefits.I have made my feelings known to Alan Perrins ,The AVFC Lions Club Coordinator,
and hopefully will be able to discuss this matter further at future Branch Chairmans meetings etc.
I hope this does not in any way spoil your Somerset Lions experience
and more importantly your Villa one.
NB: If you are a Season Ticket Holder you still have right of admission to the Holte Suite
and Holte Pub through your season card.

For the second time, due to the requirements of either TV or UEFA, this game has been moved.
It is now back to it's originally scheduled kick off time and date. Saturday 15 October 2011 KO 1500.
The demand for this game from yourselves was very low anyway, but was the only "attractive" away fixture
we could consider for October.(Sunderland being the other !!) The move back to Saturday from the Sunday
has meant that some people have had to drop out making the running of a bus not financially viable.
Therefore NO BRANCH TRANSPORT will be running for this fixture. Should any
member/s who are travelling independently and requires the Branch to get Match Ticket
s please contact me ASAP as ,the Lions Clubs Allocation goes on sale tomorrow Wednesday (21st).

CHANGE OF BRANCH OFFICIALS
Glyn has stepped down as Chairman as his business and family comittments mean that in his words "it will just the same as last year and I will not be able to devote any time to the running of the Club" As many of you are aware Glyn was instrumental in setting up the Branch back in December 2008 and since then it has gone from strength to strength. He will continue to be a member of course and he will be seen on the mini bus as he attends some of the games in the season ahead.
In view of this Glyn has asked Bob to take on the Chairmanship (which he has done for the last 12 months in an Acting capacity) and he has accepted.AVFC Lions Club Adminstrator Alan Perrins has been informed of the changes so it is full steam ahead for the new season. Nigel Shaw has offered his services in a adminstrative capacity and will look after the Membership and other duties within the Branch and Bob has accepted his offer gratefully.
Full details of plans etc for next season and a summary of this last season will be sent out in a newsletter in the week commencing 6th June and will also enclose your membership renewal/new mwmber forms. Could you all please get those back to us ASAP so we can have some idea on how to proceed with bus bookings/size of bus etc and also those all important "Intent to Travel" lists for Away Games.
To discuss or contact either Bob or Nigel please call/text e mail either at
Bob Moore Tel: 07411 944706 E Mail: chairman@somersetlions.net or post to:

CHANGES TO BOOKING AND PAYMENT CONDITIONS FOR AWAY GAMES:
As you all are now aware there is a new policy in operation regarding the Away games which now have to be payed for with the travel and ticket money combined in advance. This is mainly due to people dropping out at the last minute and whilst forsaking the cost of their match ticket they have bought, it also places the remaining passengers with what could be an increase in the anticipated cost of transport due to the lower numbers travelling.
As a result of this last episode of a “mate” of a member dropping out leaving us with the surplus ticket to get rid of or return it to AVFC it is my intention that in future any bookings involving members “booking a mate” will mean a £25 Non refundable deposit being paid by that member before the booking is even considered.
What is disappointing is that it is 3 weeks since the tickets were purchased before I was notified of the “drop out”. We therefore could have the scenario that a prospective member has been put off booking up after seeing that all the seats had all been previously booked.
I hope you all understand why this action has had to be taken but as costs rise etc. the loss of potential travellers is one which the Club cannot ignore. If anyone would like to discuss this and any other matters please ring me on the usual number.

21 January 2011

We are now entering a phase of fixtures where transport will running up to 3 times a week.I thought that it would be a good idea to post up to date details on availability and deadline dates for your tickets etc.
Premier League Saturday 22 January 2011 Kick Off 1730
Aston Villa v Manchester City
@ Villa Park
A 12 seater has been booked for this in line with the new policy regarding size of vehicles etc and booking deadlines and is FULL. May I also remind you that as I write this, the 48 hour deadline has now passed and should you drop out for this match you will still be liable for you contribution towards the transport costs should it be not possible to fill your seat. As I have already had to turn down 2 people for this game it would not be fair that they have had to make alternative arrangements to get to Villa Park when we have unknown spare capacity. If you have to drop out please contact me ASAP: details below.
Premier League Tuesday 25 January 2011 Kick Off 1945
Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa
@ DW Stadium
This rearranged fixture, from the aborted trip on the 18th December, takes place on 25 January.I have booked the relevant transport for this again in line with the new policy of size of vehicle and have 1 seat available. There is always a "Pay on the Night" turnstile at Wigan so entry to the game is not a problem .On the subject of tickets I have obtained a refund from AVFC for the tickets which will not be used for the original fixture. Can those of you who are not coming to this rearranged fixture please let me know ASAP whether you want a refund or for me to hold the money in credit for you in the event of future trips/tickets. We will be looking for a contribution (£10 per ticket has been suggested) from all those concerned towards the cost of fuel and bus hire for the aborted trip that still had to be paid.
FA CUP 4TH ROUND Saturday 29 January 2011 Kick Off 1300
Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers
@ Villa Park
I have provisionally booked a 9 seater for this fixture and all the places on this have now been taken. On Monday 24 January I will confirm this booking with the Hire Company and increase it should there be any bookings over the weekend. I have been made aware that only the 17 seater is available so it would need a least 4 people to book on top of what we have now to make it viable and more importantly cost effective to you as members. Match Tickets are very resonably priced so if you haven't already booked get in touch with your ticket and travel requirements and I can sort it all out for you.
UPDATE 1300 Friday 21st
THE HIRE COMPANY HAVE JUST INFORMED ME THAT WE WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE 17 SEATER FOR THIS FIXTURE. THEY WILL ONLY CHARGE US FOR A 12 SEATER (WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN THE 9 SEATER). THIS MEANS THAT AS WELL AS HAVING SOME SPARE SEATS AVAILABLE WE WILL ONLY NEED TO CHARGE AS A 12 SEATER.SEE TABLE BELOW FOR FULL DETAILS.
Premier League Tuesday 1 February 2011 Kick Off 2000
Manchester United v Aston Villa
@ Old Trafford
An 8 seater bus has been booked for this fixture and the tickets have been purchased and arrived. There are 2 seats availble on the bus and I am also led to believe that there are still some tickets for sale from AVFC.If this is the case, if any one fancies this midweek trip let me know ASAP and I am sure we can get it sorted for you.
Premier League Saturday 5 February 2011 Kick Off 1500
Aston Villa v Fulham
@ Villa Park
Now this is a tricky one. Only the 17 seater is available for this fixture. We have 10 bookings at present so we are now looking at having to charge £22pp for this fixture for travel. We can go one of 2 ways here.We could downsize to a 9 seater in the hope that someone drops out or take the chance we can "muster" up enough support to fill the bus. A final decision will be made on the 31 January but whatever happens transport will be run by the Club.So let me know your intentions ASAP
ADVANCED TICKET NEWS
Premier League Saturday 5 March 2011 Kick Off 1500
Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa
@ The Reebok Stadium
The Supporters Club allocation goes on sale for this fixture on the 31 January.(£24 Adults,£11 Concessions) At the moment we have a 9 seater booked and 7 people booked on it. I have also had an enquiry about the possibility of 3 people wishing to travel. The 12 seater is not available and the increased costs that a 17 seater would bring with hire cost and extra fuel make it an expensive option for only 10 travellers. So, can those of you who are already booked please confirm those bookings ASAP, and those of you who would now like to go also let me know ASAP.I would hate to increase the size of the bus and find we didn't need to and likewise if we could fill the bus more then it would be great to run the 17 seater.I will purchase the tickets on the strength of confirmed bookings by the 30 January. Payment arrangements for these tickets will be announced then.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
As we have reached the halfway point in the League season membership fees will now be halved £5 Adults, £2.50 Youths to New members. "One trip" membership will remain the same cost as now, but will in effect be a Membership as the rates are the same.
27 December 2010
INCREASE IN VAT AND RISING FUEL COSTS
I am sure that most of you are aware that on January 1 the rate of VAT is set to increase to 20% from it's current level of £17.5%. This will affect the Transport Side of the Club twofold. The basic hire charge is going up and the price of fuel will rise as the new rate is applied. Coupled with the rise in Oil Prices, the club has seen fuel rise from £1.00 a litre just over 12 months ago to the current £1.28 litre, the Club has reached the point where it cannot no longer absorb the increases any more. Since we started we have always had the "ethos" of cheap and affordable travel to games and to say that typing this is gut-wrenching is an understatement !!! However I feel that rather than impose a blanket basic price increase in the travel cost, a sliding scale should be adopted. Therfore the more people that travel the cheaper it becomes. From my side I will try and cut down on the size of bus if possible to further reduce costs. But to do that I will be taking away the last minute "have you got a seat?" option so in order to cut costs I might harm our flexibility in taking these late bookings but I feel it is necessary if we are to be "cheap and affordable". We are lucky in the relationship with our Hire Company , which I have touched on before, that they are very accommodating to us when we have had to downsize or increase and these measures will undoubtedly mean more of this. Therefore in future when I pay the Initial deposit, normally on the Monday before a weekend fixture, I will book the appropiate size of vehicle (if available) on bookings received up to then. I already have 17 seaters prebooked for all remaining fixtures so we might have to honour that booking even if we have a low number of travellers. Like I have said before this is not ideal but please remember this is the first time in 2 years that an increase has had to be considered, although this can avoided if we can get more people to regulary travel on our mini bus.
So from January 1 the following rates will apply for Home Fixtures (Away Fixtures will continue to be assessed on a game by game basis):
17 Seater:
| Passengers (Including Driver) | 17 | 16 | 15 | 14 | 13 | 12 | 11 | 10 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | £15.00 | £15.00 | £15.00 | £15.00 | £16.00 | £18.00 | £19.00 | £22.00 | £24.00 |
12 Seater:
| Passengers (Including Driver) | 12 | 11 | 10 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | £15.00 | £15.00 | £16.00 | £18.00 |
9 Seater Luxury :
| Passengers (Including Driver) | 9 |
|---|---|
| Price | £20.00 |
Thanking in advance for you cooperation and understanding in this matter. Do not hesitate to contact should you have any concerns/ideas etc

JANUARY 2011 AWAY FIXTURES
I have added the following 2 matches to the "Intend to Travel" list on the Transport Page
Sheffield United @ Bramall Lane FA CUP
Saturday 8 January 2011 KO 1500.
The FA Cup adventure for this season kicks off in the New Year with a trip to South Yorkshire. As you can see by the list I have already had a couple of enquiries. There has been no news on match tickets yet but I will post that as soon as I have it. Depending on numbers the maximum travel cost will be £25 (Adults) although this will be reduced as hopefully numbers grow.
Birmingham City @ St Andrews PREMIER LEAGUE
Sunday 16 January 2011 KO 1200.
For this match I will be following the same procedure that was taken for the recent Carling Cup tie. That means meeting up with Old Oscott WMC Coaches and going to the ground on their transport under Police Escort. So if you could budget to add £7pp to your transport costs to cover the cost of this. The main cost of transport will be as usual be determined by the numbers travelling, but again budget for Club Transport £20 maximum (+£7 Coach). As this is a Premier League fixture the Club can buy any tickets required through it's Supporters Club allocation.

Open Letter to All Members
Greetings All,
Over the next few weeks you will hear about an initiative by AVFC providing “Free Travel” for a Lions Club to a Home Game. The North West Lions Club has taken onboard this offer and will be offering it to their members at the West Bromwich Albion game on the 11 December.
I was contacted on the Wednesday following the Manchester United game by Alan Perrins (the AVFC Lions Club Coordinator) who explained an idea that he wanted to “run by me”. This was that AVFC would pay for hire of a 52 seat coach for the Arsenal game free of charge on the proviso that we as a Branch filled it to capacity. He explained that AVFC were seeking ways of ensuring that Villa Park was full for games following the 2 under capacity attendances for the Birmingham City and Manchester United fixtures.
In the discussion that followed I had to decline this offer for the following reasons:
We, as a club are finding it difficult to fill a 17 seater Mini Bus to capacity for Home Fixtures and that we only have 10 “put me down for every match” members that are travelling. The rest of our passengers are “one offs” and also South West Lions Club members who travel with us when their branch is not running transport (which happens to include the Arsenal game). So at that time as we only had 12 travellers from both branches on the bus for the game the prospect of finding an additional 40 people to travel (and also acquire match tickets for) in the space of 10 days was one that I felt certain could not be achieved. The collection of match ticket monies would also been a nightmare and one that would have stretched the Club Finances to the limit. (40 x £30 avg price = £1200 paid out in one transaction !!!). I also explained to Alan that we as a club have suffered heavily with the non-renewal of season tickets amongst members (14) and have also lost regular travellers because of this.
We have 54 members on our books, which I have mentioned previously in other items I am immensely proud of, which include a 100% renewal of membership by members who have not renewed their season tickets. This would mean that to fill a normal 52 seat coach would require an almost 100% turn out of members and that includes Family memberships who would have to find a minimum of £88 (North Stand Lower 2 Adults and 2 Youths) for Match tickets 4 weeks before Xmas. A strain that most family budgets would find hard anytime, never mind in the run up to the festive season.
I also informed Alan, that we as Club provide, in effect, “Free Travel” every 4th match as we only charge £15 per journey compared to the £20 that previous regimes did. We have also introduced half price Youth’s under 16 prices (subject to conditions)
I firmly believe that if as a region we had not suffered so badly economically recently we would have had full renewals and might have been able to extend the concession rate to OAP’s as certainly our mini bus would have been full to capacity and we would have been running an additional 9 seater as and when required.
Above is what I would term the Club reasons for declining the offer but as time has passed I have realised that there are other mitigating factors to be considered. Not least the relationship we have with our Hire Company. Over the 2 years we have been operating we have been supported and assisted immensely by Richard, Mike, Ted and Simon at Williams Self Drive so much so that I am of the firm belief that to build up a relationship like we have with these people with anyone else would be nigh on impossible. Therefore I am not prepared to put this relationship in doubt for a “one off” gesture by AVFC. Our buses are booked in June every year when the fixtures come out and even though Sky, ESPN and the Police change the kick off times and days the guys just change it without a grumble ,knowing that whatever the day we will always require a bus. Our buses are almost weekend bookings due to this. To say “we don’t need you this week because we are going elsewhere” smacks of insensitivity and could put our relationship with them into question.
Now we come to MY reasons for declining the offer
Again time has made me realise that in order for this initiative to work, is that I would have to have done all the admin work. This would have ensured that everyone had a match ticket, purchasing, collecting monies, recording and banking it etc and providing AVFC with a list to prove we had hit quota, getting quotes for a coach, probably paying for it and submitting a claim to AVFC (another strain on the Club’s finances) etc. When all this had been done it would have been AVFC who would have took all the credit as “they provided free travel” in order to get 52 people to the game. It is fun for me doing it for the group of people I am involved with at the moment and I enjoy it a lot but the pressure of doing all that in 10 days and for 52 people would have dampened even my enthusiasm and probably took away some of the magic that we all have on our journeys together. I presume this is why the initiative has been moved to the West Bromwich Albion game as it gives more time etc.
I am also not prepared to put my reputation “on the line” by entrusting outside influences to affect the running of the Club’s transport. In the way I operate at the moment, you all know that the bus will be there a certain number of hours before the kick off, if the bus is late, it is my fault and I am willing to accept that. Likewise should anything untoward happen then you know that I will do all in my power etc to rectify it. You all saw how anxious I got when we got held up going to the West Ham United game at the start of the season. What I am not willing to accept is that if something went wrong that was not my doing (i.e. Coach turns up late due to driver oversleeping) and getting the blame because I accepted the offer from AVFC and I don’t want to put you, as members, in that position.
I also feel that the any publicity that is generated with this initiative from AVFC would not be helpful to our club. Possible photos and reports in the programme and the Lions Club Website (because you can be sure that AVFC will want maximum publicity it for all it’s worth) might backfire on us with people thinking “they only come to the game from Somerset when it’s a freebie”, which, as we all know, couldn’t be further from the truth. Especially as the club is well known in the Lions Club Network for it’s passion and loyalty, when people realise how far we travel to both home and away matches
Thank you taking the time to read this and I hope that this will prevent any possible misunderstandings that might arise. Should you wish to discuss this, or any other matters, relating to the club please don’t hesitate to contact me by the means below.Your feedback is very much welcomed.See you all soon !!

CONCESSIONARY TRAVEL
On Saturday I was asked the question:
“Do we offer concession rate travel to OAP’s?”
I answered "We don’t at the moment and it is something that the club should consider and should implement if possible". I have now spent some time going over the figures and regrettably at the moment we, as a club, can only continue to offer concessionary pricing to youths under 16.
The Youth’s concession was initially brought in to encourage Parents to bring their offspring with them and even that was with the proviso of at least 11 Full paying Adults on the mini-bus.
Due to the number of people travelling recently and the “make up” of these people I have worked out that should we have charged “OAP” concessions as well as the youths we would have made a loss of over £150 on the buses we have run so far this season alone.
We have to remember that as a club we have been giving a discount of £5pp per trip per adult for the last 56 trips compared to previous regimes (£15pp Cost instead of £20pp) which equates to a maximum possible saving of £280. Away Travel is also now considerably cheaper (as the recent trip to Fulham showed, £15pp instead of £25pp previously) than it was in the past.
As like many other organisations and businesses we have seen a downturn in turnover/passenger numbers, although I am pleased to say your loyalty has been remarkable and humbling in regards to renewals of membership, and coupled with increased fuel costs we are having to cut our cloth accordingly. The most visible change of late is the less frequent running of the “Lucky Number 99 Free Travel Draw” mainly due to the almost 20% rise in diesel prices. (£1.03 per litre 05/12/09 compared to £1.23 last Saturday). This equates to an average increase in fuel costs of £12.80 a trip, so you can see something had to give.
I am always available to discuss this and any other issues regarding the running of the club and thank you for your loyal and continued support. It is always a massive disappointment to me when I am unable to bring into fruition any brilliant suggestion like the one above but I hope you can see and understand the reasons for not being able to “deliver” this time. ACORNS DRAWS AND THE FUTURE
![]()
Our highly successful and popular First Goalscorer and Correct Score Draws will be ending their second year at the beginning of December. What started off as a bit of fun at the Woodspring Pub at a televised match has now turned into an intregal part of our match day experience. Over this time we have raised over £500 for Acorns. We will of course be presenting a cheque to Acorns, of the monies raised so far this year, at the West Bromwich Albion game, which is the nearest game to the anniversary of the Club's founding.
It is intended that we carry on into our third year with these competitions and also with that, a change of beneficiary. One of our members suggested in a conversation, that whilst the Acorns is a very worthy cause, it is also a "bit away from home", and why didn't we support a more local to our area cause?............
![]()
In response to this question a verbal poll amongst the
people on the mini bus last Saturday proved very favourable to the idea of moving from Acorns to the
Children's Hospice South West. The CHSW is based in the SW,as the name suggests, and has 2 units based in Wraxall,
just outside Bristol and Bideford in North Devon with another planned for St Austell in Cornwall. So, starting at the West Bromwich
Albion game on the 11th December, the draws will become the
CHSW First Goalscorer and CHSW Correct Score draws.
Lets hope we can carry on being successful with
our fundraising in the future as we have been in the past.

CLOSING DOWN SOMERSET LIONS CHAT FORUM
I have decided to close down the "Chat Forum" part of this website with immediate effect.
There are a couple of reasons for this, the lack of use by us all (last posting 2 October), the high maintenance involved,(the constant bombardment by advertisers etc means my e mail box is full most mornings with accounts asking to be activated). I have now come to the conclusion that the work involved is simply not worth it for the "benefits" it gives the club.I am sorry to take this action but the line has to drawn somewhere. There are several "established" Villa fanzine forums available and they more than cover any aspects of AVFC and the feelings and thoughts of supporters. I personally use Heroes and Villains and Villa Talk for my daily fix of all things Villa.Hope this information helps.
Once again sorry about this action being taken. Bob (07796 923603)

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Ref: Lions Club Football 5 a Side Tournament May 2011
Greetings, those of you who visit the Lions Club Website (www.avfclionsclubs.co.uk) may have seen the above event being advertised. We, as an Official Supporters Club, are being invited to enter a team should there be sufficient interest. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday 21 May 2011, which is the day before the final league match of the season. Each team will consist of 5 players and 2 Substitutes. Nothing is “in stone” at the moment as regards the venue (it is hoped that this will be the Bodymoor Heath training ground), facilities and time etc. But the main requirement as far as the players involved is, that they each guarantee a minimum of £100 in sponsorship for Acorns, (£700 per team,16 teams = £11.200 for Acorns) and of course they are fit to play !!
From a Supporters Club point of view it appears that we would be liable to ensure the target
of £700 per team is met. Whilst our Club finances are healthy, and the working capital we hold
enables us to run efficiently on a day to day basis (i.e.: Block Ticket purchases, Advance transport
bookings, etc), a commitment to “guarantee” £700 is most definitely NOT possible. The add ons of providing
a “Club Kit” to play in on the day also adds to the expense of the day out.
The Club would be willing to
provide /supply transport to the event, but those wanting to take part must realise that the bus will
have to return that night so that the “Regular Official Club Transport” for the Liverpool game the next day can be run.
So in summary to the above it is proposed that this will be the Clubs policy on this event:
Club:
1: We will enter a team should demand arise.
2: As a Club Contribution to the day, we will
provide 7 Club Polo Shirts to be worn as a kit.
3: Lay on transport for the day at the usual rates.
Players:
1: Need to notify us ASAP as to their intentions to take part in this event.
2: Pay the
£100pp Sponsorship money immediately if required , should the Supporters Club be required to have
to put the £700 per team money “up front” or as an entry fee.
This event is for a great cause and is a smashing way to end the season. Let us know if you are interested etc. We are also willing to hear from members who disagree with this policy and would like to put their point of view forward.

WEEKEND OF THE 6/7 March 2010
There are 2 possible scenarios for this weekend:
Should we get knocked out of the FA CUP then it wil be:
Premier League Saturday 6 March 2010 Kick Off 1500
Aston Villa v Sunderland
@ Villa Park
Could you please let me know if you intened to travel to this one.I will be using the every game list for this fixture so could you let me know asap if you are unable to make it. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603
And if we progress in the FA CUP then we will play either
READING or
WEST BROMWICH ALBION
on Sunday 7 March 2010 Kick Off 1345 at either the Majeski Stadium or The Hawthorns.
Being as though we already have the 17 seater pre booked for the Sunderland fixture Glyn and myself have decided to keep this for the Sunday fixture should it occur. This means there is greater seat availability on the bus for this fixture and because of our splendid booking history with AVFC it also means that Glyn can obtain the tickets easier than before. As always a booking for the bus means that a Match Ticket will be obtained on your behalf so we can all sit together. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603

@ the Brittania Stadium
As of this morning we have received no enquiries about anyone wishing to travel to this game in the 19 days since we first made it available. It is therfore very unlikely that we will be running any transport to this game but like everything we are flexible.A bus has been prebooked anyway and Glyn and myself have said we will only cancel it if demand is not forthcoming by March 2.As always a booking for the bus means that a Match Ticket will be obtained on your behalf so we can all sit together. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603
Premier League Tuesday 16 March 2010 Kick Off 1945
Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa
@ the DW Stadium
We still have in our posession the 9 Match Tickets we had purchased for the original fixture which was postponed back in January. 5 of the original bookings have already said they would not be able to make the rearranged date (and even this is subject to AVFC not being involved in a FA CUP 6th Round replay). The tickets have to returned to AVFC by the 8th March if we do not intend to use them. A 9 seater has been pencilled in with the Hire Co and it has also been suggested that a car could be used should only a few want to travel As always we are very flexible but we do need to know ASAP of your plans if you haven't already made us aware. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603
Premier League Saturday 20 March 2010 Kick Off 1245

Due to the unusual kick off time I will not be using the "Every Game List" so if you intend to travel to this fixture could you let me know ASAP.Also, as this game has been moved from the original scheduled Sunday kick off if you have already booked with me could you let know if this change has affected your intentions. usual channels to get in touch, E mail direct at transport@somersetlions.net or phone and text to 07796 923603

Pete Baker, who does not have season ticket but does have a booking history, is intending to travel up to

He is looking for anyone in the same boat to join him and share the costs of travel etc and also to have some company.

On that note could you all look out for any used ticket stubs you have for away games as we are under the impression these will be taken
into consideration. Chris Hurst is trying to build up these in his quest for a ticket and any duplicates could help Pete and others

Well we did it and now we are on the way to Wembley. We shall of course be running transport to this one and here a few things that
we feel should be brought to your attention
1. Will all members who are season tickets "get" their own tickets on the various days that they are released by AVFC depending on
where you sit at Villa Park. This will obviously mean we cannot sit together at Wembley but it will eliminate the possibility of any possible
misunderstanding regarding ticket aquiring.
2. On that note could we ask any member who is a season ticket holder and does NOT intend to attend the final
to contact Glyn IMMEDIATELY on 07796956039 so he can use your final ticket entitlement for the benefit
of members of the club who don't have a season ticket/booking history etc.
3. A 17 seater has been booked and will run up early on Final day itself. The timetable of pick ups will be published on the transport page
nearer the day but it is our aim to eventually leave Weston Super Mare at 0700 arriving at Wembley around 1030-1100.You can work
out your pick up time by subtracting 3 hours from your normal pick up time for a 1500 kick off at Villa Park. This will enable
people to be able to do their own thing on the day and allows plenty of time to soak up the occasion and atmosphere.
4. A Mini Bus parking space has been reserved and paid for on the Official Coach Park at Wembley Stadium.
5. The cost of travel will be the normal away game rate of £20pp.
6. If you intend to travel on the Club Transport can you contact me ASAP by E mail direct at
transport@somersetlions.net or
phone and text to 07796 923603 to book your seat on the Mini Bus.

TRAVEL AND TICKET NEWS
A very busy day beckons as Glyn and I put together our travel and ticket requirements for the following matches over
the Festive Season and into the New Year. Please can you let us know off your indivdual requirements regarding tickets and mini bus
bookings for the following games:
We still have 5 seats avaialble for this one. So if you havent booked up to travel yet get in touch.
We are going to put an extra 9 seater on for this one now as we have received 2 definite extra bookings and a possible 4
more so that will still leave 3 seats avaialble for this one
Unfortunately due to holiday and work committents for many of us there is every likelihood that we will NOT
be running any "Official" Club transport for this one. However if you are planning to go up and you have spare seats in your car can you get
in touch so we can bring you together as it were. Also should you require match tickets for this one
can you also let us know.
The Club will purchase tickets as usual for all of you who wish to go to this one. A 17 seater has been booked and as many
of you know Blackburn is one of those very "comfortable" Away days. The match is a bit important too !!!!!
There is already a "Intend to Travel" list being compiled but could you all make these definte ASAP as because of the Holiday period
there is every likelihood of Tickets needing to be purchased before the Holiday break.
This game has been moved to Sunday to meet TV requirement so please please note the early kick off time and change of matchday.
I will use the travel to every game list for this one as usual so can you please get your bookings for this one in ASAP
as if the demand exceeds the normal 17 seater we will lay on an extra 9 seater.
The 2nd Leg of the Semi-Final. We will be running a mini-bus and we will also purchase tickets for this one on behalf of you all
if you are not part of the cup scheme.
For all the above :

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION REF: MATCH TICKETS
Glyn has been very busy in the last few days getting tckets for the upcoming Away fixtures against Burnley (£32),Portsmouth (£20 and £5 Youths) and Manchester United (£42). This has meant an outlay of £955. I know that we have set payment due dates for the Manchester United and Burnley games but could those of you who have booked, get your monies to Glyn as soon as possible and especially those of you booked up for Portsmouth which was always going to be immediate payment .Posting cheques (made out to Somerset Lions) to
Somerset Lions
54a Lower Kewstoke Road
Worle
Weston Super Mare
BS22 4JU
(Please put the Match Fixture the cheque refers to on the back of it)
would be a great help as that would mean we can bank the money quicker and also from a safety view means Glyn does not have to carry so much cash around if people pay him at various matches.

FREE ADMISSION TO PRE MATCH SUITE
We have received an E Mail from Alan Perrins, AVFC Lions Clubs Co-Oridinator detailing plans for the David Targett Suite in regards to Lions Club Members. Here it is in full:
Dear Chairman,
We have been looking into the possibility of having our very own Lions
Club lounge situated within the stadium for pre and post matchdays,
in response to several requests from Branch Chairman.
As a trial until the end of this 2009/10 season The David Targett suite situated
in Witton Lane will be used for Lions Club members with a current membership card.
The venue should be ideal for travelling Supporters clubs as its very close to the coach park -just 2 minutes walk.
The Bar prices for beers and soft drinks have been reverted back to normal Supporters Bar
prices rather than the corporate pricing structure previously in place. The food available
on a match day will also now include 2 different Curry’s with Rice and naan for £5.95 per head,
Luxurious Pies £3.00 or with Chips £5.50 per head, and a variety of baguettes from £2.95.
For the forthcoming games v Stoke City on December 19th and West Ham United on January 16th entry in to the David
Targett suite will be Free to Lions Club members in possession of a current membership card.
On entry you will also receive a Free raffle ticket, and a former Villa legend or two will be in
attendance to speak to fans and make the draw for a bottle of special Aston Villa Champagne!
There will be an ACORNS bucket on reception for anyone who
feels they would like to make a donation to the charity, no matter how small from
1p to £1 it all adds up! There is no obligation, only put in if you want to.
Match Programmes will still be available to those that require one on the door at cost, £3 each.
We would like you and your members to take the opportunity to make use of the facilities, and
let us know if you would like the venue to become a permanent Lions Club venue, and what improvements
you feel we should make to the facilities for 2010/11 season. If we make a success of this suite then
we see no reason why this can’t be renamed The Lions Club Lounge and fill it every match with Lions Club
members from near and far.
Normal entry fee to any of the suites around Villa Park for Lions Club members and
Season Ticket holders is £4 with a programme, and £3 without.
We hope you take this as another positive step by the Club towards the Lions Clubs
and the network as we have now grown to nearly 100 " live" Branches worldwide.
“ Up The Villa! ”
Best Regards Alan

Despite the unfortunate news that came from Villa Park yeserday afternoon that the Acorns Hospice/Lions Club Question and Answer Session has been cancelled due to lack of support from other Lions Clubs it is still full steam ahead for this fixture. We are in the unusual position of still having 6 seats available on the mini bus and the Aston Villa club website www.avfc.co.uk is saying this morning @ 0700 that there are still match tickets available.
Can I also remind you all that ALL Travel bookings must be made by using the means detailed below so as there is no confusion as regards availability, pick up times etc.

SOME GREAT NEWS FOR THE CHELSEA GAME
Those of you travelling on the mini bus will qualify for a FREE Ticket to the ACORNS CHILDREN HOSPICE/LIONS CLUB Question and Answer session with Gordan Cowans and Colin Gibson from the 1982 European Cup winning squad which is taking place in the Holte Suite immediately after the game.Tickets normally cost £5 but the Club has brought these as all the monies raised for this will go directly to Acorns. It is expected that it will last for about a hour so we shall be getting home at the time we usually do for a 3 o clock kick off.We at the Club hope you enjoy this and hope this is the first of many things we can bring you to add to your membership experience.
DECEMBER'S AWAY GAME
As you all are aware it is our intention this year to run transport to 1 Away game per month during the season.December however
puts us in a tricky situation. Our initial intention was to run to the midweek fixture against Sunderland on the 15th whose supporters
promised us a hearty welcome following our showing against their neighbours and relegating Newcastle United on the last day of last season.Due to
fact that only 4 people have shown any interest it makes running a bus up to the North East not very feasible economically.
The weekend before (12th) Villa go to Old Trafford to play Manchester United and it has been suggested by some that this would be the better
option for the club.Therfore it is proposed that this will be put out to you all to "vote" for your choice. A 17 seater had been pencilled in for the
Manchester United game and a 9 seater has been pencilled in for the Sunderland game. This will require confirmation by October 28th
at the latest so we can go ahead with ticketing arrangements etc for the game chosen. So can you send your "vote" to me if you wish to travel to the game of your choice
the majority decision will be the winner as it were and it will be full steam ahead after that.
by midnight on the 27th October at the latest. Regular updates on how the voting is going will be posted every Sunday night.
Footnote
The Club will not be running any transport to the Arsenal game at the Emirates Stadium on Xmas Sunday due to the fact the Hire Companies we have been in touch with want us to hire from Xmas Eve to the 28th December due to them closing over the Holiday Period.A four day hire makes any journey economically disastrous. If you wish to travel to this fixture independently then Glyn will happily get you tickets through the Clubs Away Ticket allocation.

This means a family of 2 Adult and up to 2 Youths up to the age of 16 for a total price of £20. BOOKINGS ANNOUNCEMENT
Ref: Occasional Travellers and Other Lions Clubs Branches Members
In view of recent events where bookings have been made and then subsequently not honoured we will now be introducing a new procedure as regards bookings from "One Match Members" and other Lions Clubs Branches members. These bookings in future will be required to provide a £5 deposit before a booking is entered on the mini bus list. This will obviously NOT affect Full Somerset Members but they should bear in mind should they say "put so and so down for a certain match" they will be required to pay the deposit. It's a shame that we have had to do this but we are not prepared to lose potential bookings because it appears that the bus does not have adequate space, when in fact, we do eventually.

SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT AND SOME KIND MESSAGES

This Horse Trailer belongs to Nigel Shaw one of the new members who joined us this past summer. As you can see it is the famous colours of our beloved team and so are his racing colours too. Nigel has also appeared in "Claret and Blue" magazine and I have attached the article so you can read more. He certainly has a a very fine Aston Villa heritage in his family. His recent quote on the forum shows he his certainly enjoying himself on our travels.
"Thanks for a great day out on Saturday v. Pompey. Thoroughly enjoying my membership with the Club. Great bunch of people. Unfortunately I will not be able to make all games because of 'horsey' commitments, but will attend as many as I can. Talking of horses. I competed in a cross-country competition today (Sunday) and can advise that the famous colours came home in FIRST PLACE! This was the first time that we have won.Must have been the influence from Saturday's game."
Click Here to read the Claret and Blue article
And talking of kind words......... Jay and Jess, also new members this summer, posted these kind words on the forum as well:
"We would like to thank the Somerset Lions
Was our third trip yesterday to the home of football... Once again myself and Jessie thoroughly enjoyed the match day experience.
We have been made to feel very welcome and look forward to many more trips.
So thanks....
next stop.. Ewood Park"

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT MEMBERSHIP CARDS
We have been informed by Alan Perrins, the Lions Club Co-Ordinator at AVFC that the Membership Cards wiil NOT be available for the start of the season. Can we ask you all to bring your Membership cards with you on Saturday from last year so you will be able to get into the Holte Suite if you are not a season ticket holder. Glyn will be bringing some of last years cards with him so those of you who may have thrown the old ones away are not affected.Your membership with us will of course be valid and we hope this situation is rectified by AVFC as soon as possible so we have no further inconvenience.New members this year will of course be given these cards, as well, until the new ones arrive.Hope this explains OK. Do not hesitate to contact Glyn ,Chris or myself if you have any queries. Our numbers are on the contact page. Click Here

SOMERSET LIONS ON ![]()
Since Chris Hurst started the group on Facebook we have had the opportunity to spread the word about our happy little band. The first post on there was from someone asking for some photos to be posted. As we do not have a dedicated album page on the website, and after discussions with Glyn and Chris, it was felt that we should utilise this to our advantage. So.all your dedicated photographers out there, post your pics of our travels and anything of interest regarding the Club etc. on Facebook and we can then pick a couple out to go on the main site as and when.
Links to the Facebook page can be found on all pages of the site and here is another one Click Here

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS AND NEW MEMBERSHIPS
Just a reminder to you all that have NOT renewed yet that Chris and Glyn will be collecting the years dues on Saturday.New Members can also join up as well. They have also asked that you bring your completed Membership Forms with you so the Clubs records can be kept up to date.
Click for a Printable Membership Form
We cannot emphasise enough the importance that you do this as the requirements of our VOSA permit mean everyone who travels with us MUST be a Member. AVFC also require us to have up to date records so our "Official Supporters Club" status is not affected. On that note we are assured by AVFC that the new seasons Membership Cards "are on the way" so we should hopefully have them for the start of the Season.
10 August 2009
CHANGES TO THE
FIRST GOALSCORER COMPETITION
Due to the fact we do not know the Starting X1 when we make the draw at Michaelwood I felt some changes should be made to make this a lot more fairer and avoids any disappointment if your "pick" is either injured or not chosen to start. So when the Stadium announcer announces the team before the game the squad numbers in ascending order will correspond with your pick.
For Example:
| Number Drawn | Drew By | Squad Number | Player | Paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Glyn Hurst | 2 | Luke Young | £1 |
| 2 | Bob Moore | 7 | Ashley Young | £1 |
| 3 | Chris Hurst | 10 | John Carew | £1 |
| 4 | Pete Faulkner | 17 | Stiliyan Petrov | £1 |
| 5 | Craig Dunham | 26 | Craig Gardner | £1 |
| 11 | Dan Sketchley | N/A | Sub | £1 |
The winner will then be announced when we get back on the mini bus to come home.Hope this works but least we can give it a try.
PS: Don't forget your £1 coins, you know we guarantee to have no change !!!!!
8 August 2009
Thank you for all your Travel Bookings today. The best single day since I have been doing this for them .I have updated the Transport Page (Portsmouth and Manchester City now added) (Click Here) but can you all please check that I have put you down for your bookings or even worse not included you.

It was proposed that an "Intent to Travel" booking would be taken up to 2100 on the Sunday preceding the game. There will be exceptions but these will be posted as usual on this site. So here it is our first European Home Tie of the season. I will take intent bookings and confirm the running of Transport as soon as a sufficent number of these is reached.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: REF: AWAY GAMES
Somerset Lions Away Match Tickets and Travel Season 2009-2010
Well it's August and it's full steam ahead for the new season. We have had a couple of enquiries from new and old members alike on the arrangements for travel and tickets for away games for the upcoming season. Here are a few guidelines:
Where there is demand and availability transport however possible will be run. Bear in mind that Monday Night and other midweek games will rarely be run due to people having to have time off work etc. Notification will be given well in advance when there is an exception to this policy.(Transport to Home games that fall into this criteria however will be run)
Match Tickets for these games will be purchased by the Club under our Official Supporters Club banner and all your personal reference numbers will be logged by us and AVFC so your own booking history is maintained and enhanced as the season progresses.
Definite and Intend to Travel bookings will be taken as and when they appear on the website.
Payment for match tickets must be made by yourselves no later than 14 days before the fixture.
This will enable us to return any unsold tickets due to drop outs etc. After this deadline you will liable for payment whether you use the ticket or not.Should you decide to travel with us after this cut off time then you will responsible for getting your own Match Ticket if the Clubs unsold ones have been returned. Travel payments will be taken as usual on the day of match itself.
and on that note..........Click Here for something that just might interest you !!!

VERY IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MEMBERSHIPS AND RENEWALS
We have now reconsidered our decision to have a Pay Pal Account.
This will NOT now be happening,
however we have opened a new
Bank Account for the sole purpose of handling the Club's finances.
We have also opened a Savings Account which will be for the money we
raise for
from the competitions we run on our travels.
(Currently standing at £157) Details of the handover to them of the money raised in the last season will be posted here as soon as Glyn
and Chris have arranged it
I know that some of you have been waiting for the Pay Pal to be set up so you could join/renew online, so can I ask all of you who wanted to do this to do it the "Old Fashioned" way by sending a cheque made out to "Somerset Lions" to Chris with your Application/Renewal. His address is on the Printable Membership Form and also on the Join Us page.
As a back up to this we will also collect Membership Fees on the Bus when you travel with us for the first time this new season so you can do it
with that thing called cash !!!!!!
On a more serious note can you all bear in mind that to keep within the terms of our VOSA Permit we are not allowed
to carry Non Members due to the Hire and Reward implications of the regulations.
Also we will be again operating a Temporary Membership
Scheme where Members can book a seat on the bus for one off Guests who will be required to join the Somerset Lions for the day and also provide full details of address and contact telphone number.
The cost of this will be £5 for Adults and £2 for Youths under 16 per trip
Remember: No Membership = No Travel.
On the subject of Membership Cards these have not yet arrived from AVFC but they will be sent out as soon as they arrive. (Postman Pats Van is stationed on the starting grid outside Chris's house ready to go !!! ) If they do not arrive in time to send them out to you for the Wigan game we will hand them out on the bus

Aston Villa v ???????????
![]()
The Draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round takes place on August 7. We will then know who our opponents are and whether we will be playing on Thursday 20 August or Thursday 27 August in the Home Leg. I realise that it is difficult in the area we live to get to these midweek games with the inconvenience of getting time off work etc. Due to the easier availability of mini buses and people carriers in midweek the plan this year will be to take bookings up to the Monday prior to the game.A decision will then be made on whether it is viable to run transport and also what size of transport to book if numbers are sufficent. I will keep you posted on developments etc. but I will take "pencilled in" intent to travel bookings. Bob.
